Kembali ke tanah air di tengah Agresi Militer Belanda tahun 1948, ia bersama para kyai lainnya memimpin pasukan Hizbullah melawan penjajah, hingga pernah mendekam di penjara. Sebagai seorang ulama modern, ia dikenal sangat toleran dan menghargai keberagaman. Ia bahkan menolak ajakan bergabung dengan DI/TII pimpinan Kartosoewiryo demi menjaga keutuhan Negara Kesatuan Republik Indonesia. Nama besarnya di dunia pendidikan diakui secara nasional sebagai salah satu pencetus berdirinya Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN) pertama di Indonesia. Berkat jasanya yang begitu besar, sosoknya terus diusulkan oleh Pemerintah Kabupaten Garut untuk mendapatkan gelar Pahlawan Nasional. Warisan fisik dari perjuangan beliau adalah Yayasan Al-Musaddadiyah yang didirikan bersama istrinya, Hj. Atikah Musaddad, dan keluarganya.
